Jessie and Nick showed up to pre-fish for their first time on the Ohio River for the Cabela's King Kat tournament that is held here in Henderson Ky. It is very intimidating to say the least coming from an area where the average depth is not much over 8' to fish 40'+. We started off catching bait and then moved to drift fishing on the Ohio. The first Blue Cat that buried the rod in the holder was amazing for them to see and I will not forget their faces when the fish surfaced. I set their rods up with the proper rigs for the occassion and it made it even more memorable for them to do it on their own equipment. Congratulations on your first Blue Cat's....Here Kitty Kitty!

The theme lately on the Ohio River is "where is the current". Lot's of fisherman believe that current is just associated to anchor fishing but it also is a major factor in how catfish feed on the drift bite. The fishing spot I travelled to with Steve Ford, well known Sports and Outdoor Writer for Evansville's Courier and Press was no different. We spent several hours looking for bait with no luck and left us using old frozen bait to fish with which I do not have quite as much confidence. Freshly frozen bait is fine but old freezer burnt, dried out 90+ day old stuff is not very productive. They were with me to help locate, scout and sore mouth a few fish in preparation for filming an Outdoor Channel show with Joe Thomas called Stihl's Reel in the Outdoors. We finally put it together with time dwindling and slugged it out with a beast of a 40 lb Blue Cat, which was so mean it destroyed my big net. Way to Go Zack and Congrat's on your new freshwater personal best fish and Blue Cat. Be sure to look out for the article in this Sunday's issue of Evansville Courier and Press.

My Birthday Trip

If you have been on the Camo Fish website before you most definitely have seen Mr Jim holding up a big fish. Today was no different only the first rod that buried in the rod holder he said to me "Are you going to just look at it or reel it in?". I grabbed the rod and fought the Blue Cat all the way to the net. I just about broke down because that was just about the best birthday present I could have received. We have fished over 200 mi of river together, travelled to 5 different states and both held our biggest Catfish but letting me catch ALL of the fish on this day.....I can't even put into words what it meant. Thanks to you Mr. Jim and I hope we can enjoy many, many more Ohio River giants. See you soon!

The Day Before School Starts

This young man's dad Carl told me specifically he wanted his son to catch a bunch of fish before school starts and indeed we did. We didn't find that Ohio River Monster today but we did catch some nice fish and his personal best Blue Cat which is pretty cool. I'm pretty sure by the smiles you see in these pic's he was having a good time and something he can go back to school and tell his buddies about doing this summer. It's Everybody's Birthday !

We do alot of drift fishing for Blue Cat's on the Ohio River but something happened today that was simply spectacular. On many occassion's over the years I have seen 4 fish at one time flopping in the bottom of the boat from a simultaneous bite. But today I witnessed along with these gentleman in the picture 6 rods get hammered at once and boated every single one of them. Even though none of the Blues were absolute giants they were all really nice fish and the chaos was unforgettable. I think I have found the correct name for my boat... "Chaos". We caught alot of fish and everyone can say they caught several good ones before the day was over. Happy Birthday to everyone onboard (all of their birthdays were close together) and I will see you fella's soon!

Today started out cloudy and a little cooler with a light wind but excellent current in the river. That showed to make the fish bite pretty well. We hammered our biggest fish of the day, a 30 lb blue cat on our very first drift and first fish of the morning. We caught 12 -15 blue cats on our trip and had a lot of rod bending action, a good note to end the summer on before starting school. Right out of the gate today we started catching fish with 15+ Blue Cats caught and a 20 lb average. I'm pretty sure they are Ohio River Catfishing fans after today with little or no slow action between bites. They kept us busy cutting bait and reeling them in on every drift. This is definitely the start of a tremendous post spawn bite with lots of big fish in the area. If you are looking to book a trip and wondering when to go It's On! Mr. Jim "Strikes" Again

If anyone keeps up with our trip reports and photos you have definitely seen Jim in them. He has caught 3 fish over the 50 lb mark in the past 3 yrs with me and today was no different. We had 6 fish that weighed 160 lbs + total weight in just 3-4 hrs of fishing with a 66 lb giant. He is a fantastic catfisherman himself and has a good idea when to target thos big ones. I look forward to fishing with you again next month and hopefully we will bust another hog. See you soon!

A day away from the office

They started a little slow on us today with the river jumping up several feet the night before blowing the fish out from where found the day before. We fought hard and stayed with them and caught some nice Blue Cats when they finally turned on. Looking forward to seeing you guys again soon!

This time when this couple from Northeast Ky returned we experienced better weather and a more manageable river level. We started out kind of slow with a full moon the night before but the fishing sure picked up mid morning. Everybody on the boat caught Blue Cats over ten pounds with several 20's caught. The 13 yr old young man even caught a 12 lb Striper, a bonus trophy for sure. Thanks again and I hope to see you soon.

We had a tough day with the river falling 4' and a major cold front coming through the night before. They managed to catch a few fish and had a great day trading stories. This morning was a little bit of a surprise seeing how much the 3" rain affected the river level. They were running 13' of water on the dam yesterday while I was fishing and today they were running over 30' causing a 4' rise. We started out by getting our fresh bait and it did not take long to get a good one in the boat. We only had one fish under 10 lbs today and several over the 20 lb mark with a 30+ pig. We had to work for them and bites didn't come on every drift but it was a very productive and rewarding day. Somedays are bittersweet when you have to work for every bite and then it pays off.

IT'S ON!

I've been waiting for a while now to say this and it has been a while coming. IT'S ON! After a tremendously wet Spring with all time flood records being broken and the fish almost immediately going to a hole and spawn, the river has some stability and the bite is getting hot. We boated over 200 lbs of catfish in less than 4 hrs with 5 fish over 20 lbs and a 40 lb pig. Mrs Linda caught her biggest fish today and her husband had his biggest stringer of fish (all caught and released unharmed). They were bringing in doubles about as fast as we could get fresh bait down.

Hybrids and Catfish

On a previous day catching bait and locating catfish with sonar I found some nice Hybrid's, White Bass and Striper's. The very first fish this 11 yr old young man put in the boat was a 7 lb Hybrid. We shortly followed it up by several other's over 5 lbs and then moved on to catch some Blue Cat's. The young man had the hot hand today and also caught the 20 lb Blue. We had a great time fishing today with fairly good weather. The water was on a dramatic fall and made the bite tough along with spawning conditions. Even though it was a slow day we still put a personal best 22 lb fish on the boat. Congratulations guys and I hope to see you in the future!

Again we started late due to the same weather pattern that moved through yesterday. After the weather moved out we went to work on the Blue's and boated some good fish. We observed the river had risen almost 4' overnight when we arrived but it really didn't show to bother the fish until the afternoon. I had a wonderful time fishing with these two guys but the consensus was the barbecue afterwards at the Nally's market in Uniontown Ky was the real hit today.

The start to our day was postponed almost 5 hours due to stormy weather. We just had that much more time to tell stories, eat breakfast and load up on some coffee. Right away when we arrived the fish were biting pretty well. We used a combination of drifting, dragging and anchoring to catch our fish and the bite seemed to pick up later in the day. I'm looking forward to fishing with these two long time friends again soon.

Today was a nice change of pace and definitely good practice targeting a variety of Ohio River fish. We started out fishing for Skipjack which were on the "target" list of fish to check off. We made short work getting everyone a fish and enough to go after our next species. Ictalurus Furcatus/Blue Cat. They caught 3 nice one's to take pic's of and then it was White Perch, White Bass, Striped Bass, Hybrid's, Channel Catfish and Emerals Shiner's. The most interesting thing of the day was when the hair sized hooks and line came out and minnow's were being caught on a rod and reel. I was shocked and amazed and if I had not witnessed it I wouldn't have believed it. Micro fishing....that is what it's called. Thanks again guy's and I hope to have you back on the Camo Boat soon.

You all might remember my little buddy Christian from pictures last year about this time on the website. He was back this yr puttin' it on the catfish like a pro. We caught lot's of fish and the prize of the day was a 9 lb Channel Cat which is a good one for the Ohio River. We did have a beast on for just a moment but it managed to pull away. New Personal Best!

My fishing partner today was a new Ohio River angler but definitely a seasoned fisherman. We started out anchor fishing ledges in 50' of water using cut shad and the bite was a little on the slow side. Even though the Blue Cat spawn is upon us they don't all go in a hole at the exact same time and good fish can be caught. You just have to think like a fish and figure where they want to be. Today fishing with my ol' buddy Kim started a little slow and the river was on a dead fall. It took us a while to figure out where they wanted to be and minutes after we located some good fish to set up on a storm carrying lightning, hail and 70+ mph winds blew up. We cut and ran back to the ramp just in time to keep from getting soaked to the bone and safe from the approaching lightning and wind. The bait of choice today was cut shad and the bigger fish were marked from the spawn but already healing up. Thanks again Kim and see you again soon!

THE RIVER IS ABOUT TO GET RIGHT!

This Spring has been an amazing flop so far due to extremely high record setting flood waters. Things are about to change and we are going to get even. By Sat May 21st the river is going to be fishable and at a manageable level to catch some good fish. This time last yr we had already caught several fish over 60 lbs and one 75 lb giant. The skipjack are in full swing upriver at the dams that are fishable so when it gets down they will be catchable here for a few weeks. Mooneye is also one of my favorite baits as well and will be biting soon. They are a bait not too many folks no how to catch, where to find and what to target them with. If you are looking to learn some bait fishing techniques, they can be incorporated into the trip so now would be a good time to take advantage of this service. The water temps are at a level where drifting for blues will also be the technique of choice. In the past after a major flood of this nature the fishing was superb for just about all species. Get your boat ready, it's fixin' to happen. Check out the spring Blue my good friend caught with me last yr.

The weather man was a little off this morning when Capt Paul headed towards the fishing spot. The air was really damp and it was cloudy most of the morning which did not allow much sunlight. Needless to say it was COLD! The Blue's didn't seem to mind though and they put 5 in the boat within 15 min at the first spot. Congrat's on the fish guys and we'll see you soon! The wind was the theme of the day on the Ohio River near Evansville. From the time Capt Paul and co-angler's left the ramp a 15-20 mph sustained wind with 30 mph gusts were being observed. Luckily the Ohio River has some sharp bends and with some pre-planning fishable areas were found. It was about 30 min before the first bite occurred and within a 5 min window 50+ lbs of fish were caught. These two new Ohio River Angler's boated 215+ lbs of fish in a 6 hr trip with a 35 lber being the kicker of the day. Capt Paul said he might have to install a special seat belt for "quickdraw" next time....so his buddy doesn't miss a turn. Thanks again guys and we'll see you again soon!

Ice Water Blue's

This morning when we left the Henderson boat ramp it was 28 deg with a light N.E. wind. Luckily the weather reporter was wrong and it warmed up to 34 deg. We started out slow for the first couple hours and the fish weren't cooperating very well. Then the gulls became active all over the river, the geese were on the move and the rods started bangin'. We were catching them two at a time and most of them were around 10 pounds with a couple near 20 pounds. Not too shabby of a bite considering we were fishing below freezing water temperatures. I mentioned to my co-angler that if we keep on them we would find a hog and sure enough....it happened. A personal best 55 lb Blue Cat. Congratulation's on the fish and I hope to see you soon!

Winter Cat's

A day ago I drove 250 mi roundtrip to collect skipjack for catfishing and with fresh bait in hand I "assumed" we were in the driver seat. You know the old saying about assume. It quickly turned into monkey see monkey do and I collected some nearby shad. Without the aid of the Down Imaging we would have been blind and it made short work of it. The wind was a big factor and it made fishing alot of spots very difficult, especially knowing some places were holding good fish and we couldn't set up on them. In barely and hour's time we boated 100 lb of fish of our 150 lb total with none under 10 lbs and it was very rewarding after the rough start. "New" for this winter until March I will be doing one on one/two (in continuation of the "River familiarization and Tournament preparation guided trips) person classes for new river anglers. This class will include how to modify your approach to weather (cold front) conditions and adjusting to water level variables, preplanning to eliminate unproductive water using resources available, rig tying, cast nets, bait preparation/cutting and a Q & A session so you are able to discuss what you need. Everyone knows their strong points and weaknesses and this gives you a chance to brush up in those areas (including myself). I can remember when pieces of the puzzle were missing and someone shared some valuable info with me. Hopefully we will have what you need to make it "click". This will be held at John James Audubon State Park in Henderson Ky in their Learning Center. I will schedule these classes at your convenience Mon-Sat. Today was the second day after the largest storm system we've seen since spring moved through bringing widespread heavy rains and high wind. Behind it left us some bone chilling cold air and a sharply rising river. These two started out fishing for Sauger and Capt Paul shortly realized the fish he'd been on scattered and moved due to the water condition's. They then went to "Plan B"...fishing for Blue Cats. After lots of moving and scanning they located a pocket of active fish and managed to put some nice fish in the boat including a 22 lb Blue and a 10 lb Channel Cat. "The Perfect Storm"

The Full Moon was shining bright at 6 a.m. this morning when Capt Paul met his co-angler. Not only was the Moon in full effect, so was the howling 15 mph wind. The wind was building the entire day while they were fishing but so did the bite. Almost 300 lbs of fish were caught today with the biggest fish near 30 lbs, several others over 20 lbs and so many 15 lbers they lost count. It was a rough ride back to the ramp but well worth it. "Couples Retreat"

Today on the Camo Fish boat Captain Paul treated this couple from Louisville to some Blue Cats. They took a day away from busy schedules and a new baby to enjoy a morning of fishing. The weather man was a little sideways on his forecast because the sunshine never broke through the clouds and the wind was quite brisk to say the least. Nevertheless, they scratched out some pretty good fish with the "lady" having bragging rights today. Congratulations on your fish and see you again soon!

Today on the Camo boat the action started fast and furious right from start. The first fish Austin caught was a 25 lb Blue Cat and would be the biggest fish of the trip. Nevertheless, 250 + pounds of fish was caught in a 5 hr trip......pretty good considering one 14 yr old young man reeled in all but one ( we talked his dad into battling one). This young man caught 3 fish better than 20 lbs, 5 fish 15-18 lbs and 15 others 5-12 lbs. They were biting like bluegill on a bed, only bigger

While on a bait run for upcoming trips Capt Paul noticed conditions favorable to produce some good sized Blue Cat's. The first couple fresh cut Skip Jack's produced 40 + lb Blue Cats. A local fisherman Capt Paul knew was nearby so he even called him over to battle what would be his personal best Catfish of 48 lbs.

This young man's 16th Birthday was on the 4th and what a better way to celebrate than with some big ol' Blue Cat's and spending time with his dad. They caught the "Catfish Slam"....Blue Catfish, Flathead Catfish and Channel Catfish and were nice specimen's of all three. It was personal bests all around for these first time Ohio River catfish angler's with numerous 20+ lb fish caught. It was 26 degrees when they left the ramp and the fishing started out kind of slow but soon warmed up along with the temps. Congrat's on your fish and Happy 16th Birthday! See you Soon!

Today on the Camo boat Capt Paul was fighting the wind in excess of 20 m.p.h. and 3-5' swells along with 30 deg temps. That ain't enough to keep these two die hard catfisherman from chasing Blue Cat's because they know it just take's that one bite to make it all worth the effort. After a few Here Kitty, Kitty calls from the return visitor, they were hooked up and some nice fish were coming in the boat. A Day From Work

The day started out a little chilly on the Camo boat with a 10 mph N.E. wind. The Hybrid Striper's were biting well (target species) for the first couple hrs then the sun came overhead and slowed things down a little. We then switched gears and fished for Blue Cat's and they were on fire. The first 4 baits that hit the water produced better than a ten pound fish. One fish in the mid 20's was caught and it was a personal best Blue Cat. Thank's again guy's and hope to see you again soon!

Kid's Day Fishing

Today's trip with Capt Paul was all about the kid's onboard the Camo boat. He could feel the anticipation in the air because when they showed up to the first fishing spot they were silent, a sure sign of excitement and not quite sure of what to expect. It didn't take long and they were hooked up and bringing them in the boat. The second fish of the day was a surprise 12-14 lb striper, not too shabby for a first striped bass and 11 yrs old to boot. They released some really nice fish today over fifteen pounds with one 24 lber, all of which were personal best fish. Thanks again and hope to see you again soon.!

Started out before daylight heading up river in an attempt to beat the fog. Arrived at fishing destination beating the fog in quest for a big Cat. A little fish was caught first and finally got the bite that was wanted but the fish pulled off. Worked for hours in hopes to get another big bite with no success. Capt. Paul saw an opportunity that could not be passed up and switched to fishing for stripers. These fishermen caught their limit in very little time. The amazing thing about the Ohio River is all the opportunities that it offers, if one species is not biting it is likely that another will be. See you again soon!

Jim Does It Again!

It was bone chilling cold when leaving the boat ramp after waiting for the heavy fog to lift. Well worth the wait and cold run to the fishing spot. The big fish are on the move following bait and this is the 2nd fish over 50 lbs. in 2 consecutive trips to this spot. Some of you may remember Jim from throughout this year and last year on the Camo Fish boat. He caught a 73 lber in Sept. 2009, a couple over 40 lbs. this year, and several other nice fish this year. Nice Day on the Water

Beautiful weather this morning and the fishing wasn't half bad either. Capt. Paul really enjoyed listening to the "razzing" these 2 gave each other all day. A couple of fish over 20 lbs. were caught and numbers of good "eating" size fish were also reeled in. Nothing but blue cats and 1 striper caught today. See you guys again soon!

Tough Day

It was a post-cold front conditions day and a starch north wind plaqued the fishing. Several small fish were caught, none worthy of taking photos since these young men had caught 60 lbers. before. Hopefully on their next visit there will be better weather conditions and bigger fish.

Business Trip

Capt. Paul really learned a valuable lesson today. The only device used today to take pictures was Capt. Paul's phone which was later dropped and broken. After taking the phone in to be replaced Verizon did not return the memory card and it has not been recovered yet. As for the fishing, a 25 lb. blue cat was caught and numerous other nice fish. Return Visit Paid Off

This father and son team fished with Capt. Paul approx. 1 and 1/2 years ago on a brutally cold February day. There were a couple of really good bites on that day which were definetly big fish but no hook ups. They got a little payback today. Numerous 10 lb fish were caught and a 60+ giant, a fish they both have been trying to catch for a long time. While fighting the fish it surfaced blowing big bubbles and returned back to the bottom but the angler won, this time. Congratulations on your trophy Blue Cat and hope to see you again soon!

Happy 40th Birthday!

These guys have been eager and ready to try their luck at catching a Blue Cat. Neither of these guys had caught a Blue Cat before today. Where they live in North Central Ohio, there are no rivers that have numbers of good size Blue Catfish. What a birthday present it was to catch a 30 lb. Blue and biggest fish of his life. Again all the fish today were caught while drifting. Happy Birthday and congratulations on your fish!

It was a beautiful morning on the Ohio River today. There was very little wind and crystal clear blue skies. Although there was no current to be found the catfish were biting fairly well. All of today's fish were caught while drifting. Most of the fish were in the 12 to 15 lb range with a couple of 20 lb fish. See you again soon!

Today on the Ohio was a challenge for sure with 10-20 mph sustained winds. It was post frontal conditions and the bite was slow but still caught some nice fish with one near 20lbs. Numerous small blue cats were caught and it was a good experience for these anglers wanting to learn techniques of catching cats. Thanks and see you again soon!

Return Trip

Today was a return visit for these Southern Illinoisian fishermen to fish for some Blue Cats. The day was very comfortable but the fishing was tough and they were scattered. Did manage to find a few and enjoyed some fine BBQ at the end of the trip. Thanks again and hope to see you again soon!

Windy Day Blues

Leaving the boat ramp this morning it was breezy and it was going to be a challenge with no current and a 15 mph East wind. Regardless the fishing turned out pretty well even having to work for them. This was the first time that this gentleman from Southern Illinois experienced the Ohio River and the first Blue Cat he caught was 18 lbs. Capt. Paul had a great time trading stories about river experiences and sharing the Ohio River with him for the first time. See you again soon!

Girls Day Out

The day started out slow again with overcast skies and a light cool breeze. It wasn't until the sun came out that the fish started biting and they caught 5 in pretty short order. It was personal best Blue Cats all around today with the biggest being 22 lbs. This Grandma decided to take her 2 grandaughters out on this fishing trip because her husband and other family members usually go out on deep sea fishing trips and she can not go because she gets sea sick. It was nice to see them all out enjoying the day together!

Today on the Camo boat the fishing started out at a stand still with very little action. Capt Paul noticed a subtle change mid morning with the current and it made the difference. He said it also could have been due to Kim making his infamous "Kitty" call which needs a patent and an agent (Paul has already claimed). He started singing and Paul said it was remarkeable how the fish bit suddenly afterwords. One time they doubled up after the call was made. Paul has never been superstitious but after today maybe a little voodoo might be the trick. That bigun' Kim called up pushed the 50 lb mark which beat his personal best caught earlier this spring with Capt Paul by 6 lbs. Thanks Again and see you in Nov!

A Foggy Morning

It was a rainy, foggy start to the fishing trip this morning. There was little current but regardless of the current and weather conditions the fish started out biting pretty well. These guys are lifelong friends and you could tell by the constant "razzing" they were giving to each other. Capt. Paul had a blast listening to their stories and even sharing a few of his own. Numbers of 10 lb. fish were caught with the biggest of the day being a 30 lber! On today's trip Capt Paul had no idea how little time together these gentleman get to spend with one another until out fishing with them. One angler was a local but the other was in from Oregon, a trip he only makes once every two years to So Indiana. Capt Paul came home with a bundle of stories to tell of these two who also had numerous trophy fish experiences to share while on their trip. He was very excited to know one of them had never caught a Blue Catfish and that this was going to be his first. They caught numerous fish over 10 lbs and a couple over 20 lbs which are not too shabby for a first. He will be looking forward to the next time these two meet and hopefully get to take them fishing again.

"Better Than the Flea Market"

After 30 minutes of fishing first thing this morning she made the statement this is "better than the flea market". This couple came down yesterday and decided to stop at the Super Flea Market in Evansville and she thought this might be the highlight of the weekend however she changed her mind after a chaotic 30 minutes of catfishing action. They both caught their personal best Blue Cats today. The fishing never slowed all day with the big fish of the day caught at 11:30 am. This whopper weighed in around 50 lbs. He caught this nice one but earlier in the day she was able to reel in a nice 35 lber. See you again on your Birthday, Leo and congrats on your fish!

This married couple made a long haul from Eastern Kentucky near the West Virginina border to here in Henderson in hopes to catch some monster cats. The day started out with some pretty fast action with 6 teenage catfish being brought onto the boat in 30 minutes. After catching numbers of small fish the camo boat moved to a new location where bigger fish are more prevelant. She beat her husband today with a Blue Cat over 20 lbs. which was also her personal best catch. Can you imagine their 5 hour drive home today with her rubbing this in?

First Catfish

Out of the 3 guys that went out today there was only 1 veteran catfisherman and the other 2 were new to the Ohio River. The day started out a little slow with some cloud cover and an east wind with little to no current. A couple of hours were invested in the search of a big fish and the big fish were a little reluctant to bite. Changed gears and found a school of active 5 to 12 lb fish. A 120 quart cooler was filled in short order. Thanks and see you again this Fall.

The morning started out with a delay due to rain. The fish were also on delay this morning not wanting to do much while the front was moving through. However when the sun came out the Camo Fish boat made a move to a new location and found a school of good fish. At this point several 20 lb. and a 40 lb. fish found their way onto the boat. Early Morning Drive

It was a perfect morning starting out with the temperature at a very comfortable range. These guys had a very early morning leaving Ohio to come to Henderson at about 3 am in the morning. The drive was well worth it for it was a good day of fishing. The first bite of the day came with FOUR fish in the boat at the same time! They both had personal best catches of 6-7 lb catfish before today and now can both say they have caught catfish in the 20 lb range. See you guys again soon!

Birthday Trip

This young man's father picked him up this morning with no idea he was going to go Catfishing on the Ohio River for his Birthday. WOW!!! What a Day!!! Over 300 lbs of fish were caught with only one fish under 10lbs. They had one spectacular drift in particular where they were fishing 5 rods and 4 bent at once. They landed all of them and not one was smaller than 17 lbs and the biggest was 30. Happy Birthday and I hope to see you again soon!

After reading the article about Capt. Paul featured in the Southern Illinoisian newspaper on 7/16 this grandpa decided that he would schedule a trip for himself and his 2 grandsons. No one could have dreamed of the day they would have today. The day started out early and strong with the 11 year old bringing in a very nice 40 lb catfish. This size of catfish is a very nice fish to say that you have caught! What happened next was hard to believe...the 13 yr old then reeled in a monster catfish weighing in at 85 lbs. What a truly fantastic day! This fish is a fish of lifetime and Capt. Paul still can't wrap his mind around it but loved every minute of it. See you guys again!

The day started out early at first safe light fishing for stripers and hybrids. A few good ones were brought into the boat before the sun came up over the trees. This is when the fish shut down at that spot and a long run was made to a new location. The gamble paid off and then they were coming into the boat right and left. One of the guys had been with Capt. Paul numerous times and wanted the other guy to have a chance at catching a big catfish. Before today his personal best was 6 lbs. and the first one that he brought in the boat doubled that. Congratulations on all the personal bests caught today and Capt. Paul was happy to be a part of it!

At the beginning of the day two of these guys had never caught a Blue Cat before or experienced the Ohio River. After a couple hours of a slow bite and a dramatically rising river some feeding fish were found. The rods started bending and the fish came aboard at a steady pace. This morning while drifting along the Camo Fish boat came across a school of fish and Capt. Paul said "ok guys drop your baits down". A couple of minutes later 2 of the rods went down and 1 of the fish was obviously bigger than the other. It was ripping line off the reel and the 14 yr old young man was just holding on. After a short battle the 17 lb Blue Cat was boated and a few minutes later the beast came aboard. The first thing out of the young man's mouth was "WOW what a fish" and the next was "He pulled so hard it ripped my boxers". This fish tipped the scales at 60 lbs. A great start for this two day trip. Congratulations-see you guys tomorrow!

Today started out a little cloudy with cooler temps and everyone in higher spirits. The 1st place anchored at everyone caught fish that was a good representation of the Ohio River. It was rewarding to see the rod bend over and see a good battle to get nice fish into the boat. Glad to see all 3 of these guys go back to Michigan able to say they caught a nice Blue Cat. A great end to a two day fishing trip for these life long friends.

These fellas are from up north and are used to some cooler temps and were not quite ready for this 100 degree day. Today went out hoping to catch some big Blue Cats but it was so hot everyone could hardly catch their breath. Managed to catch several small fish but none of any size. Striper Day

Since the Capt. was on vacation this week he went out with his fishing buddy Steve, "Mr. White Bass", to catch some stripers. They caught 20 stripers and hybrids over 15 inches and several over 10 lbs. They were running quite a bit of water at the Dam and had to work for them today but it looks like it is shaping up to be a good season for the stripers. The shad are finally coming into the right size range and some hot top water action will soon follow.

This is the kind of trip Capt. Paul really enjoys- a Mother/Daughter trip which will make memories that will last a lifetime. Started out the day fishing for bait fish and Ashlee hooked up and battled a 3 lb. Hybrid on ultra light tackle. After this they moved on to chase some catfish. As Ashlee was kicked back taking a little nap a rod went down and everyone yelled for her to get up and reel it in. She jumped up and stumbled to the rod and reeled in a nice 20 lb. Blue Cat. Boy-was she wide awake after that! They moved back up current and dropped the lines back down and caught several more Blue Cats real quick. Ashlee even let her mom grab a rod and fight a nice 30 lb. Blue Cat into the boat. Wonderful day of fishing-see you again soon!

Well Capt. Paul has been talking with this guy for a month about catching stripers and techniques used and finally the day was here for them to go out. Today the 3 lb. hybrids were coming into the boat right and left which left them wondering where the big ones were. Finally he got "hooked up" with the one he came for-a 9 lb. hybrid striper. After striper fishing for a while they then moved and targeted Blue Cats. Doug summed up the day when stopping in at the store for BBQ after fishing and the people at the store asked "what did you catch" and his reply was "I caught a Whopper!"-referring to the 20+ lb. Blue Cat that he caught.

Team Firefighter RN

Capt. Paul was in good hands today because he took out a firefighter and a RN. These 2 are engaged to be married and this was a fun day trip for them. They came today hoping to catch some nice catfish but got a whole lot of other surprises! They ended up catching 5 different species of fish-Blue Cat, Channel Cat, Striped Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass, and a Gar. Capt. Paul had a great time joking and laughing with these two. At one point in the day, Capt. Paul and Chad were at the back of the boat preparing some rods and Krissy was at the front of the boat watching the rods that were in the water. Paul says to Chad "You watch- now that we are back here one of those rods are going to go down and she is gonna catch a big one". Sure enough no more than he got the words out of his mouth and the rod when down. Krissy caught the largest fish of the day-a 25 lb. Blue Cat. Yet another wonderful day of fishing and again we finished it off with BBQ on the way home. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding and we will see you again soon!

Repeat Trip

Today's trip was a repeat of their last trip for this couple with excellent fishing again. Started off right away catching an abundance of nice Hybrids and Stripers. The water was up some today but it made no difference. The rods were bending and fish were steadily coming into the boat all day. Yet another day finished off with some excellent BBQ.

Stormy Day Birthday Trip

After locking through the Dam and then taking a "beating" with the rain this birthday trip ended up very successful. Some of you may remember seeing this young man featured last month on our website in our News and Events section with the fish he has caught. Christian's birthday fishing trip became really special once the rain let up and the fishing began because the first fish he reeled in was the biggest of his life weighing in at 30 lbs. Capt. Paul called it a "moment" when Christian got the fish into the boat, he dropped his rod and gave Paul a big hug. Not only did he catch Blue Cats and Channel Cats but he also reeled in a striper and a hybrid. What a great day!

First Time "Locked Up"

Early this morning as the Camo Fish boat locked through the Dam these 2 guys joked that this was the 1st time they have been "locked up". The first fish caught for the day was the biggest of the day and weighed 25 lbs. The fishing was great today with a steady bite all morning with more than a dozen Blue Cats caught. These guys "wore out" the fish and themselves today and topped off the end of the day with some great BBQ.

Greg's Back in Town

Greg and his son Garret were in town today visiting. Capt. Paul was very excited to take his good friend and excellent fisherman out on a trip. As some of you may know Greg was the fishing department manager at the Gander Mtn. store in Evansville, In. however he moved away to Texas earlier this year. To know Greg is to love him! He will make you laugh till your sides hurt and from the moment you meet him he seems like a good friend that you have known forever. Sure had a great day fishing and talking. Greg and his son Garret are both outstanding anglers and Capt. Paul sure has missed fishing with them on the boat this year. You guys are always welcome and we hope you will be back soon. Just Out Scouting

Capt Paul went out this afternoon with "Mr White Bass" (My Buddy Steve McAtee) to do a little scouting and verification for a couple hours the Cat's he found the day before were still there. Oh yeah, they were still there. After one drift they had 3 in the boat with one 30 lber and another that got away while trying to take photo's of the rod loaded up pulling drag in the rod holder. That is what Paul likes most is the initial bite, watching the rod bend violently.

Worn out and Sore!

It had been a long time since a client had said to Capt. Paul "I am hurting-you reel the next one in". Shortly after saying this a rod went down and Capt. Paul went after it to reel it in and then another rod went down and Josh had to go after it and they were doubled up. So many nice fish were caught in such a short time that they had to take a break and prepare to move to the next spot to go after a monster. No luck today with that monster however good times were had reeling in lots of fish and sharing stories about past duck hunting adventures.

Another great day of fishing with yet another Catfish Slam! For those of you who do not know-Capt. Paul calls catching one of each of the species of catfish (Blue, Flathead, and Channel) a Catfish Slam. What a fantastic variety of fish were caught today. Deer Crossing??

Today was another hard day of fishing with the river on the fall. Everyone did catch some small fish. This deer was spotted crossing the river with ease like it was out for a swim and then when it saw us headed for the bank, bounded out of the water, and ran up a small hill. Even with a slower day of fishing you never know what sights you might see out on the river! One of the clients from today sent me a picture of what was swimming in the river while he was fishing in Brazil-check it out!

Austin's River Monsters

This father and son team is back again. Their last trip consists of catching a bunch of Channel Catfish and this trip they were after a big one. Austin got his wish by reeling in a huge 32 lb. Blue Cat for the last fish of the day. He had already reeled in numerous smaller Blue Cats, some Channel Cats, and 4 Flatheads. Again today these clients had what Capt. Paul calls the "Catfish Slam" by catching all 3 species of Catfish in the Ohio River. With the day winding down Capt. Paul said "How about 1 more fish guys and then we will call it a day" and here is the video of that catch.

Fishing Report Week Ending May 22

The water is up and muddy but numbers of nice fish were still caught this past weekend on the Camo Fish boat. We were using 8 - 12 oz sinker's, Tangling With Catfish Rods (www.tanglingwithcatfish.com), Monster Rod Holders (www.monsterrodholders.com), Mustad # 39951BLN Demon Circle Hook's (www.mustad.no), Power Pro 80 lb braid fishing line , Cut Skipjack for bait and Shakespeare Tidewater reels (www.shakespeare-fishing.com).

The White Bass and Hybrid's have been biting pretty well around the dam's on small live shad and artificial bait's including Little George's, curly tail grub's and spoon's. They are spawning in most area's and look for the bite to slow a little after they move out to deeper water. It will not be long before the Striped Bass (Rockfish) start moving up to the dam's and can be caught pretty well with some cooperation from river level's.

The Channel Cat's are absolutely tearing it up eating anything they can get in their mouth's right now. Nightcrawler's, Shad Gut's, Dip Bait, Cut Shad/Skipjack and Chicken Liver are all producing number's of fish. They can be targeted on rip rap(rock), tree tops, lay down tree's, barge's, grain elevator's and just about anything they can get behind. They are just about to spawn and are the only catfish species that can be caught better when spawning unlike Blue's and Flathead's that go in a hole and won't eat (much) when on the bed's.

Blue Cat's and Flathead's are putting on the feedbag right now with Fresh Skipjack my bait of choice. They are also feeding on Shad Head's and Shad gut pocket's (if you can find em'). We've caught Blue's lately on Skipjack as big as 12" and you would be surprised how small of a fish will eat a bait of that size. If they can choke it in they'll eat it. There is really no depth range you will find them in better than another with report's of fish being caught in 6-65' of water, mainly dependent on time of day you are fishing. This time of yr they will move up shallow to feed at night before heading to deep water during the day. They are also getting ready to head for area's they intend to spawn in .

First Time Big River Catfishing Trip

The Camo Fish boat was really lucky this afternoon dodging rain storms and enjoyed beautiful weather. Today this couple enjoyed what Capt. Paul calls a "Catfish Slam". This means catching all 3 popular catfish species out of the Ohio River (Blue, Channel, and Flathead Catfish). This was the first big trip out on the river for them and they had quite an experience. Capt. Paul was thrilled to experience this trip with them today and thinks that catfishing has gotten into their blood. See you again soon!

Wife's Day Out

Jim and Mary both took a day off from work today to go out fishing. The 1st time Mary tried to go- it was pouring down rain and so we had to do a raincheck. Jim has been several times but this was Mary's 1st time out with Camo Fish. Boy did she get to show a few Blue Cats who was the boss. She even went as far as to "trash-talk" the catfish as she was fighting them to the boat. She caught several nice fish but Jim ended up with the largest catch of the day with a 40 pounder. Glad to see them back and looking forward to next trip. Maybe next time we will catch another 12 incher (between the eyes).

Ohio River Fishing Report For Week Ending May1

Again, congratulation's to Farrow and Cline in this past weekends Cabela's King Kat Tournament win here in Henderson and most of all everyone made it in safely. The fish have been on fire here lately with large numbers of fish being caught including some giant's. There has been several fish over 40 lbs caught this past wk on the Camo boat and the Spring bite is just getting cranked up. We've got a good solid month before the big female's will be going to the spawning bed's and with fish spawning at different time's they can still be caught in good number's even then.

The river stages this week: Upriver at Cannelton Lock and Dam on the lower guage it was 13.86' at 11:00 p.m. on 4/25 and will rise to 16.4' at 11:00 p.m Wed 4/28. At Newburgh Lock and Dam it was 17.04' on the lower guage at 10:00 p.m. Sunday 4/25 and will rise to 19.6' by 7:00 p.m. on Thursday 4/29. Then it is predicted to fall to 16' by Sun May 2, depending on how much more rain we get upriver. Sunday 4/25 at 10:00 p.m. at J.T Myers/Uniontown Dam 17.0' was observed on the lower guage and is expected to rise over 4' in 4 days to 21.3' by Thursday 4/29. It is then predicted to fall 3.5' by May 2nd.

The White Bass and Hybrid's have been biting pretty well around the dam's on small live shad and artificial bait's including Little George's, curly tail grub's and spoon's. They are spawning in most area's and look for the bite to slow a little after they move out to deeper water. It will not be long before the Striped Bass (Rockfish) start moving up to the dam's and can be caught pretty well with some cooperation from river level's.

Today I had a couple from Tennessee out on the river. This guy had to scramble to get here for his trip because he originally had a trip scheduled for later this month and has now been called back to work. At the 1st place that we stopped to fish a 12 lb. striper was caught while also catching some smaller catfish. We then moved to our next spot and he caught his personal best which was a 25 lb. bluecat. At this spot we also caught several in the 10 to 15 lb. range. With 45 minutes left in the trip we decided to move and try one last spot and go for a "big" one. After just getting the rods put out one of them bent over and then away we went! He reeled in a very nice 48 lb. bluecat and set another new personal best all in one day. These United States Catfish Association members really had a great day. I look forward to our next trip-see you soon!

This was the 2nd trip these guys have taken with us. They went last summer and had a great day and took home a nice bunch to eat. Today they set out to catch a nice one and that they did! Daryl was on a quest to catch a big fish today because Denny had been the last one to catch a nice size one. They were taking turns on reeling in fish and wouldn't you know it when it was Denny's turn the rod went down and he reeled in a nice 35 lb. flathead. When netting this mean flathead it thrashed around and broke the handle off the net but we managed to get it into the boat. We then went and caught a nice mess of fish for them to take home again. Daryl next time will be your turn for the big one.

This guy traveled about 4 hours from Central Illinois area to come fishing today. He fished all day while his wife was out shopping all day-this is always a good trade off!! We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to be out on the water. On todays trip he caught the largest blue cat he has ever caught and the largest flathead also. This long awaited trip did finally pay off! What a nice day-we were lucky to have such beautiful weather and such a good day of fishing. This was a nice change of pace for this Father and son because they usually fish for the catfish at night and they were thrilled to see how well they were biting during the day. This was this young man's first day ever on the river fishing. No better way to spend one of his days off from school during spring break than to be out fishing. These angler's experienced Blue Catfishing for the first time today with around 250 lbs of fish caught. 16 Cat's were caught with 3 over 20 lbs and most fish were 10+lbs. The wind was blowing about 10mph out of the West with a slight rise occurring in the river levels. 15.2' was observed on the lower guage with 27' on the dam.

Today on the Ohio River I had a chance to Sauger fish with 2 of my oldest and best friends. We caught three limits of Sauger with several over the 3 lb mark and most of them were between 1.5 and 2 lbs. The river stage was 15.2 on the lower guage and running 29' of dam with a light N.W. wind. Sauger jigs tipped with minnow's in 25' of water was the magic number. Fish were holding tight to the bottom on ledges with moderate current.

Well, so far 2010 on the Ohio River has been virtually unfishable by boat in the Henderson Ky area. Starting about Jan 12th the temps are going to rise and the fish are going to turn on. We had a little snow here and covered over the ramps but the water has fell and is going to get good. Last yr at this time we caught several gaints over 50 lbs with one pushing 80. "Ruined" on Sauger Fishing

Headed out early this morning with a guy from Owenboro, Ky who had never been sauger fishing. The river had come up a couple of feet overnight and the fishing proved to be difficult but well worth it. He was able to catch some nice sauger and end up with his limit and had a nice mess of fish to take home. Well I do believe that there is now another one of us that is hooked on sauger fishing. We headed out early on this cool morning. Early morning temperature was hoovering right around 20 degrees. We were on a mission to catch some sauger and blue cats. We started off the day with a bang and caught several sauger. Then we moved on to catfish and we were able to reel in a few nice blue cats. Mission accomplished! As an extra bonus we also reeled in an approx. 10 lb. striper.

Well it's not a catfish but still a Ky State Record Fish. She caught her first Sauger, 20 lb Blue Cat and record breaking Blue Sucker. Not a bad day for the first time on the water this yr. The fish was caught on a 3/4 oz Sauger jig tipped with a minnow and fought like a truck on light tackle. The old record was near 5 lbs and her fish weighed on a certified scale was 8.33 lbs. That's gonna' be a hard one to top.

They have been planning for months and it all came together today. This couple caught 2 limits of Sauger and 5 catfish that totaled 125+ lbs all in a half day trip. It was nice to be a part of the experience watching the pole's bend and the net constantly going in the water. It is hard to convince people to fish the cold but starting about now is the most productive time of yr to fish the river for just about everything.

I could tell right away when these two showed up in the rain I had some serious angler's. We bumped from hole to hole in the pouring rain getting pelted all the while but, knowing what was beneath the boat in that murky water was enough to keep spirit's high. They landed one in the middle 30's while catching a couple nearing 10lbs also. Two other violent pull down's left us empty handed but got the blood flowing knowing they were big fish. These two were seasoned catfish angler's and I think I learned just as much from them as they might have me.

I'm a lucky man! How many guy's can say they went fishing on their wife's birthday and got away with it? That's how supportive of what I am doing she is. She even pulled the boat out of the water for us, now that's love. This father and son duo met in the middle, one from Chicago and the other East Tennessee. They just wanted to have fun and catch fish and with Channel Cat's burnin' up the water I was able to fill the order. They we're hammerin' so fast for about 30 min I threatened to turn on some circus music. The little dog in the pic got to go fishin' too and seemed to enjoy it. Surprise Birthday Trip

It was her birthday today and she was surprised by her husband with a fishing trip. She had not been out on the water fishing in a long time but really enjoys fishing. Today she ended up catching the largest catfish she had ever caught at approx. 7 lbs. and also reeled in all the other fish caught with the exception of one. She let him catch 1 today but it was too small to keep and had to be thrown back. It was a nice day to be out on the river and fish several spots. They did end up with a nice mess of fish to take home.

Today we had 3 generations out fishing-grandpa, son, and grandson. It was a race to see who was going to catch the largest fish of the day. This trip was won at the Zion Baptist Church Outdoor Expo. The wife caught a striper and a catfish that were both the largest fish she had ever caught. First Time River Adventure

This young man had his first river fishing trip and I believe the memory will last a lifetime. He spent the day catching 15 catfish with his grandfather. A few times throughout the day I overheard the young man asking his grandfather "when are we coming back again?". Today we were fishing for the smaller and more active channel catfish that are perfect for a 10 yr. old on his first trip. They took home plenty to eat and I am sure they will have a nice fish fry and lots of fun reflecting on their trip.

The clients featured today are 2nd timers this summer. We had beautiful weather for fishing today unlike last time they went when it was rainy, foggy, and dreary. The clients couldn't believe I was taking out people fishing on my birthday but I couldn't think of a better present than to be out with such great people fishing! Also what a great way for the young man pictured to spend his last day of summer before leaving to go to college the next day. The fishing was as good the last time they went and they took a cooler full of fish home again.

Some of you may remember some of the people featured in these pictures from about 1 month ago. Yes they were back again and it just seems to get better and better with each time they come and fish. Pulling a rabbit out of a hat

Today we were drifting for blue cats and the bite started out slow. The bite turned on about mid-morning and we caught one that was about 25 lbs. Before we could get it out of the net another rod went down-Fish On! We caught several others right together and got the fish we were after and then headed home. This is just a prime example of how 1 bite can change the whole day! Some of the fish caught today will be featured in an article in the Evansville Courier newspaper on Sunday August 16, 2009 so watch for it!

This young man didn't have a clue what his dad was putting him up to. He just told him he was gonna' get him up at 5:00 a.m. and do something. The smile on his face said it all when he came to the door and found out he was going fishing. This is what makes it all worth while for me. The fish actually didn't bite all that well with current changing constantly from the dam shutting back gates. We still managed to scratch out a few with some pretty nice blue cat's.

These guys from Muhlenburg County Ky put it on em' today. For the first time using 8-10 oz sinker's, circle hook's and a "bumping" technique these two gentlemen sure picked up quick. After a few swing's and misses on the circle hook's and dodging a thunderstorm we finally figured the blue cat's out and they started coming aboard in bunches. In today's case a lightning storm which ran us to the truck along with 12 other boats helped weed out the "not so serious fisherman". The sun came out, and so did the Catfish. I worked until 11:00 p.m. last night, bed at 1:15 a.m., up at 4:15 a.m. Fished in the heat until 11:00 a.m. today and then back to 8 hr job from 3 -11 p.m. last night. Slept in truck at ramp (which I arrived at 2 a.m.) until 4 a.m. Started catching bait at 4:15 a.m. for clients which will arrive at 5 a.m. , then fish 6 hrs in heat. And.....The reason why I do it........ Look at this smile ......that's why. What more inspiration does a person need? Second cast, first Striper, 12 lbs.

Back in January I was fortunate enough to set up and give a seminar at the Gander Mtn Store in Evansville IN. This young man won the trip and is now a Ohio River Catfisherman. His father was with him enjoying the day watching as he reeled in fish after fish. It just so happened to be the day before Father's Day, an even greater gift for him. The river stage near Newburgh this day was 22' with stained water and a 76 deg water temp while on the rise.

The river stage was 23.50' on the lower guage at J.T. Myers (Uniontown) Dam on the Ohio River. We started out fishing for Hybrid's while just a few were caught a strange sight appeared. A 7+lb Shovelnose Sturgeon hit a jig and the fight was on. These fellows in the picture to the right are what makes taking people fishing all worth while. We had to really work to catch em' but when it finally happens, even in 90+deg temp's it is that much more rewarding.

The river stage is 21.9' on the lower guage near here on the Ohio River in Henderson Ky. That is considered to be high water when you factor in what species of fish we were chasing. The current was about 3 mph and most boats you see were trolling crankbaits. Dragging a lure around is last resort and luckily we did not have to use that technique. Anchored over top of the fish with a spoon seemed to produce the most numbers of fish with several over and many fish near the 10lb mark.

This Father and Son team from Mt Vernon caught some nice channel's in somewhat high water. The river stage was 24.5' on this young man's birthday fishing trip. I showed them lot's of stinky smelly bait and is what we caught all of our fish on. If it wasn't bloody and fresh they wouldn't touch it . I saw several small blues and was a good sight showing signs of a productive spawn last yr. Yet another day confirming that the big blue's are locked up on the spawning beds. I also talked to some other accomplished fisherman claiming small catches of blue cats while the flatheads are biting just ok.

These 3 guys came a long way down from central Indiana to fish the Ohio River. The day started out beautifully with some nice channel cat's and big hybrid stripers. The young man in this picture showed dad and friend how to do it with the biggest cat caught on this trip. I was impressed how this seven yr old hung in there all day with us while we worked hard to catch fish. The blue cat's are definitely locked up on the bed's and tough to find. Give 'em until about July 15th and it will be on again and will kick off the fishing I enjoy most , drifting for blues. The river stage 17.36 with a S.W. wind of 5 mph and stained water.

You sure could tell these guys have fished together before. The competitive spirit came to life when the fish really started biting and the rods started bending. I really enjoyed watching these guys and especially when "Dad" reeled in the biggest one of the day. We had a great day on the Ohio near Newburgh Dam today with approx 30 fish caught. The river stage was 18.71 and steady on the lower guage with a strong current. The water temp was around 62 degrees and we had overcast skies and light SW wind. The smile on these catfisherman's faces is what it's all about. I remember each and every trip when I was that age and I hope this one along with their father's is one they will not forget.

We fished at Cannelton Dam Sat Apr 18 in 2.5 mph current, blue-bird skies and E wind with very little biting. My friend Jason did catch this fish to the right but nowhere near the fish we traveled to catch. Even though the fishin' was tough I learned some new spots which will hold some big fish and techniques to catch them when the bite isn't that great.

It was a cold start this morning at 7a.m. heading downriver from Shawneetown. The fishing started out with a good bite right at the first spot and for a couple hours seemed really exciting. Then the catfish switch flipped to OFF and for several hours we worked diligently to even get a "tap". We managed to scratch out about a dozen catfish with most being blue's. These guy's came a long way (Baltimore, Maryland to be exact) to experience the Ohio River and for first time river catmen they did extremely well. I even had an experienced man on the anchor helping me out which made the task of holding in 2 mph current a safer event.

The water was near 50 deg today with a fast rise projected on the lower guage at Newburgh. A cold streak has hit the area with a high today around 55. Even with a rising river, the current was strong and seemed as if the fish wanted to be in slack water. The two gentleman today fishing with me had more river fishing experience than I've been alive. We had a good day fishing while all the while trading knowledge and tactics about catching cat's. I think I was the one that learned the most from this adventure out with veteran fisherman.

The water was just right today for some Striper, Hybrid and White Bass action. Two limits of fish over 15" were caught but, we had to work for them a little. When you catch a fish like these on light wire jighead hooks and 10lb line you've got your work cut out and better have a little finesse. A good drag system and knowledge of how they're going to react when you bury the hook in 'em helps too. To the right are just a couple fish caught in 2.5 hrs casting jigs. The white bass(not shown) are full of eggs and it will not be long until they are spawning. Unlike other fish like catfish and largemouth bass the white bass can be caught in large numbers while they are schooled up for the spawn.

The Father and Son team fishing today caught all three species of catfish found on the Ohio River. Those are the Flathead Catfish, Channel Catfish and Blue Catfish. The fish seem to be in kind of a transitional phase moving around searching food out of their deep water overwintering holes. Even though a small flathead caught, the 48.6 deg water it was caught in hopefully marks the start of them moving out the mud and trees they've been buried in/around. The channel catfish are definitely on "FIRE" feeding on small cutbait. While fishing for Blues with large baits the rods were bouncing all day.
The river stage was 24+ ft with at least a 3mph current with very light wind out of the S.E. The fish seemed to pick-up a little when the wind rose from 2 to 5 mph.

Yesterday, I traveled down to Caseyville ramp on the Ohio River only to find again (the theme lately) high winds gusting up to 45 mph. So instead of braving the big water I put in on the Tradewater river. The channel catfish were biting pretty well on small pieces of katjuice soaked skipjack along with 6 small blue cat's. The biggest was about 5lbs along with a 4.5 lb channel. All caught on med action spinning tackle. The water temp in the creek was 48.6 degrees and soon the flatheads will be moving in. 30+ fish were caught which is big fun on light equip.

I just wanted to give a thank you to Gander Mtn sporting goods in Evansville IN for letting me advertise in the store. Everyone there has been very supportive of my business and I appreciate them letting me have a seminar and the meet and greet. Greg, Doug, John and the rest of the fishing dept staff make it easy because they are fisherman themselves and know their products. Most of all just a bunch of good people.
Now for a little bit of fishing news here on the river. Right now it is 30 deg, wind 20mph NW and 20.7' and rising on the Evansville guage. I had a couple of guys supposed to fish tomorrow but unfortunately due to dipping temps and 20-30 mph winds forecasted we had to postpone our trip. I really like the current river stage for blue cats (up a little and rising) only if we had the weather cooperating. Everyone's safety is first and foremost and it definitely is not the time of year for mistakes. 38deg water is not forgiving. There will be other days to try and catch a trophy of a lifetime.

Today Ralph, Blake and Evan Riley were on my boat with the intentions to catch a few channel cats for dinner and make some memories with a video camera. The channel cat's didn't want to cooperate very well so, we decided to switch gears and (because we just couldn't help ourselves) target a big blue cat. The blues also started out slow and we began switching baits, moving and eyeballing schools of good sized fish. Then, we added the Katjuice. WOW!! 3 bites in 5 min one 7lb, another tried to pull the back of the boat off and somehow eluded the circle hook. Then, Blake ties into the BEAST. Oh, I forgot to mention he is 12 yrs old. He fought and pulled, gaining and losing line back and forth for 20+ min. Finally, we get it in the boat with two guys that have combined 55+ yrs of river experience looking at each other bewildered and starry eyed wondering how big she is. Probably due to neither of us ever catching a fish of this size. She weighed in at a whopping 79.5 lb and I feel lucky to be a part of this memorable experience. I hope Blake remembers this for the rest of his life because I know I will. You can catch the full video of this monster being caught soon on YouTube. For records the water was 40.3 deg, stage at Newburgh 21.3 on the lower guage, wind ssw at 5mph and fishing 47' of water near channel ledge in 8oz current. Keep Fishin!

Finally, the river is on the way down with Catfish and Sauger biting well again on the Ohio. Today I went after bait and took this magnificient picture of a Bald Eagle. I caught loads of Shad but, the two eagles at 30 yds made the trip.

Man was the weather man wrong today or I was just cold. The current was about 5 mph, the water was full of trash and leaves with sleet falling all morning. We fished near Newburgh with little caught while watching the river fall at the rate of .2 per hr. That quick of a fall usually spells disaster but, you don't know till' you go. This coming weekend (Jan 24th & 25th) should set-up to be good fishing for both catfish and sauger with the river finally coming down. Sauger trips going fast this week so call early!

Channel Cat

I left the house today with the intentions at 1:30 p.m. to catch enough for dinner, maybe 3 or 4 and go home. My friend Ralph Riley owner of Katjuice gave me some G & S cheese bait and I grabbed 3 med action spinning rods used for sauger and headed for my little honey hole on the Green. I checked the river stage when I left and it was 34.8 on the lower guage at Newburgh. The water was stained but, not extremely muddy. Just a good color. The water was up in the bushes where I was fishing and the fish were right on the outside of them in about 15' on the edge of dropoff. I started fishing with 3 and within 20 min, I was down to 1 in my hand and catching em' with almost disbelief. I was on kind of a product review to see how good this G & S with Katjuice mixed in it really was. Without a doubt' it will be my go to bait for channel cats this yr and I'm getting excited already thinking about what fishing it in primetime will be like. Here is 10 I kept for supper in picture not showing is 2 blues 7-10lb and 20 channels all caught in 2 hours.

I'm on the Ohio River below Henderson with the idea it's going to be a great day. Wow was I way off. The river is 24.39 on the Evansville guage with over 110' of water on the dam at Newburgh with Jt. Myers below us with what had to be the gates out of the water. The river is nothing but mud and we were fishing with 16+ oz weight. Nevertheless, I gave it a good go for about 2 hrs over 50' of water that I had marked fish in. Caught 6 with the biggest one 15lbs. I probably would have stuck it out a little longer if the weather man had been correct about the temp and the timing of that cold poooring down rain. Keep fishin'

My Very First Fishing Report

This is my very first entry into what I hope will be years of archived reports for me and you to refer to. The Ohio River near Cannelton was 21.82 on the lower guage with 90' on the dam (7.5' on each gate with 12 gates). It was 50 degrees with high pressure and a 5-10 mph S.E. wind. My fishing partner today is here holding one of 11 blues with one nearing the 50lb mark. I hope to see you return soon to my new website and good luck fishing.
